- Thanks for the compliments Jim. It is greatly appreciated.
-
- This reminds me of a story:
-
- Rick Salmon, who is our "Scala Evangilist", went to a seminar three
- years ago, at a hotel in Washington DC. The seminar was about multimedia
- presentations.
-
- The seminar director wanted examples from the various platforms (PC,
- Macintosh and the Amiga) and Scala was chosen, by Commodore's
- Federal Systems Group to represent the Amiga. Rick decided to show off
- the then new Scala MultiMedia MM210 product.
-
- Each representative had 45 minutes for their presentation.
-
- A Barco projection system was used to hook up to the PC and Mac. The PC
- was represented by the IBM Ultimedia group and the Mac by some
- communication expert who worked in DC. Their systems were placed on the
- tables behind the audience. Everyone faced the projection screen.
-
- "So, where is the Amiga setup?" you may ask. Well, I'll get to that in
- a bit. :)
-
- First up was the Macintosh and the representative used Macromedia Director
- (which is overkill for a multimedia presentation) for his demonstration.
-
- Well, this guy put together a pretty nice presentation (postage stamp sized
- QuickTime animations and video clips), but I think he lost some of the
- audience, because as Rick observed, some people were crossing their arms and
- taking deep breaths. Others were clearly not paying attention, because
- they weren't looking at the projection screen, where the demo was taking place.
-
- Up next was the representative from the IBM Ultimedia group.
-
- Sometimes, and it eventually happens to all of us, the system
- crashed on the poor Ultimedia representative. In the end the demo
- wasn't all that great anyway. And some people started leaving.
- Clearly the director of the seminar was getting worried and
- commented so, to Rick.
-
- Well, Rick being the consumate "showman" that he is, came up with
- this cool idea and consulted with the director. Who quickly agreed
- to it.
-
- After the IBM demo was over and a short break, people started filtering
- back into the room. First surprise is that nearly everyone came
- back in to see the Amiga demo. Very fortunate for them. :)
-
- The PC and Mac equipment were already packed up and so when people came
- into the room, some were wondering where all the equipment disappeared to.
- Some thought that the seminar was over. The director/host asked everyone
- to sit down and introduced Rick. Except that Rick wasn't in the room. :)
-
- The director said, "Please welcome Mr. Rick Salmon of Scala, Inc."
-
- Rick, deliberately waited 15 seconds before entering the room. He
- popped his head in and said, "Is this the multimedia seminar?" And
- people nodded yes.
-
- Rick entered the room with the A1200 in one hand and the mouse and
- power supply in the other hand and delibrately held them above his
- head so that everyone could see. Afterall, Rick was not only showing
- of the Scala software, but the multimedia power of the A1200! :)
-
- Some peopled whispered, "What is he doing?" or "Where's the computer?
- All he has is the keyboard."
-
- Rick plugged the A1200's composite output to the Barco, the audio
- line-level outputs to the mixer and the magic began.
-
- The rest is history. Needless to say, Rick was the only one to get
- a thunderous applause. :)
-
- Hope everyone enjoyed that story.
